Sixth Edition
Overview
Carlo Verri, born in Milan into the distinguished Verri family, turned to agriculture after the inheritance of the estate of Biassono. From 1801 onward he published a series of rigorously scientific and didactic works. Saggi di agricoltura pratica reached six editions, the last issued posthumously in 1840. A member of the Accademia dei Georgofili and later active in public office under the Napoleonic administration, Verri brought together agricultural science and public service in a career shaped by both Enlightenment ideals and the political transformations of early nineteenth-century Lombardy. This volume represents the final and most mature form of Verri’s treatise on practical agriculture. It is enriched by a lithographed portrait of the author and by technical copper engravings illustrating agricultural implements, underscoring its character as both a scientific and practical manual.
Inside the book
The work brings together a series of essays devoted to the propagation, care, and regulation of mulberry trees, alongside systematic treatments of vine cultivation. These core sections are complemented by additional studies on green manuring and the cultivation of alfalfa, illustrating Verri’s interest in soil improvement and crop rotation as part of a coherent agricultural system. Specialized chapters address the production of silkworm seed and the management of mulberry leaves, linking plant cultivation directly to sericulture. Throughout, Verri balances theoretical principles with experience drawn from practice, presenting agriculture as a field governed by observable laws but refined through sustained experimentation. The treatise thus synthesizes botanical knowledge, rural technique, and economic purpose, offering an integrated vision of farming suited to the environmental and productive conditions of northern Italy in the early nineteenth century.
Why La Fenice likes it
Enlightenment agriculture at its most thoughtful, linking mulberry trees, vines, and silkworms into a single, beautifully reasoned system of cultivation.
