First German Edition
Overview
Felix Sahut's Die amerikanischen Reben is the authorized German translation of his Les vignes américaines. Sahut, president of the Horticultural Society of Montpellier and a leading authority on American vines during the Phylloxera emergency, wrote from one of late nineteenth-century viticulture's principal research centres. The German edition was prepared by Nikolaus Freiherr von Thumen. The study won international recognition, received prizes, and appeared in several translations. It belongs to the post-Phylloxera reconstruction of European viticulture, when American vine species and grafting techniques were central to recovery, and it addresses both scientific and practical audiences.
Inside the book
First German edition, with numerous illustrations in the text. The work examines the introduction of American vine species into European viticulture and the practical responses to Phylloxera, chiefly the adoption of resistant American rootstocks. It discusses varieties such as Clinton, Concord, Jacquez, and Riparia, evaluates their use as producers or grafting stock, and treats grafting techniques, pruning systems adapted to climates and vineyard layouts, and defensive measures including sulfocarbon compounds. Includes an appendix listing principal directly cultivated vineyards in France.
Why La Fenice chose it
A clear-eyed field guide from the phylloxera era: Sahut’s French know-how, here in German, pairs American vines with practical grafting.
