Overview

Extremely rare first edition of this important treatise on pyrotechnics, which occupies a pivotal position in the history of fireworks, documenting the moment when the craft moved decisively beyond its early modern foundations and embraced the analytical rigor of science. Issued during the French Revolutionary period and printed by the Firmin Didot in An VIII (1800), the work brings together domains that earlier authors had tended to keep separate. Military artillery, maritime and terrestrial warfare, civic celebrations, domestic entertainments, and theatrical effects are treated as parts of a single, coherent discipline. Rather than privileging monumental architectural displays alone, the author emphasizes mechanical precision, chemical control, and repeatable processes. Fireworks are approached as instruments governed by measurable forces, controlled reactions, and carefully timed effects. This rationalized outlook marks a clear departure from Baroque spectacle and places the book at the threshold of the chemical revolution in pyrotechnics. At the same time, the inclusion of table fireworks and stage effects reflects a widening of scope, acknowledging fireworks not only as tools of war or public ceremony, but also as agents of intimacy, illusion, and theatrical drama. The treatise stands as a natural successor to Frézier while anticipating the later refinements of the Ruggieri tradition. Its attention to theatrical applications makes it especially significant for historians of performance, stagecraft, and the technical arts, while its military sections anchor it firmly within the artillery literature of the period. The result is a synthesis that captures pyrotechnics at a moment of transformation - from inherited craft to disciplined, systematized science.

Inside the book

The volume systematically examines the construction, preparation, and use of fireworks across a wide range of contexts: warfare on land and at sea, public festivals, private table entertainments, and theatrical productions. Detailed instructions guide the reader through the fabrication of rockets, aerial fireworks, ground-based effects, and complex composite displays. Recipes for colored fires, methods for regulating burn rates, and mechanisms for delayed ignition are presented with clarity and technical care, alongside discussions of safety and control. Particularly notable are the sections devoted to theatrical pyrotechnics, which describe the creation of stage lightning, thunder, sudden illuminations, and other dramatic effects designed for live performance. These passages offer rare insight into the technical backstage practices of early nineteenth-century theatre. The book is illustrated with eleven large folding plates at the end of the volume and an additional folding plate inserted within the text, engraved by Antoine-Joseph Gaitte. These plates depict tools, apparatus, and finished devices with precision, serving both as practical guides and as a visual record of pyrotechnic technology at the turn of the century.

Why La Fenice likes it

A rare blend of battlefield science, stage spectacle, and household chemistry from the French Revolutionary era, where Enlightenment showmanship meets the birth of modern pyrotechnic science. A firework of a book, which quite ironically bares a bad water mark!

Condition Report

Pp. [1] f.e., [4], 163, 11 folded plates and [1] folded table between pp. 42-43, [1] e.r.

Full leather binding with clear signs of handling, showing minor losses to the corners and more pronounced losses along the spine edges and the border of the back cover. Despite this wear, the binding remains structurally sound. The interior is affected by very notable water staining from approximately page 60 to the end of the volume, impacting the eleven tables as well. The volume is fully collated and complete, and the text remains largely legible. Given the water stain, it's a study copy rather than a pristine collector’s example of this extremely rare edition.
