First and only German translation from the second French edition of Brun-Chappuis's practical manual of pre-phylloxera Swiss viticulture. Brun-Chappuis writes as a practicing vine-grower from Vivis, now Vevey, in Canton Vaud, drawing on experiments made in the Ryff valley on the shores of Lake Geneva. The book answers a mid-nineteenth-century moment in which vineyard knowledge moved through agricultural societies as well as through local practice, and field experience was being tested, translated, and adapted for cantonal use. The Landwirthschaftliche Gesellschaft im Aargau financed and distributed this German printing chiefly for its members, with annotations intended to make Vaud methods applicable under Aargau conditions. The unnamed translator worked from the revised French text, preserving the manual's preference for district terminology over learned abstraction. Taken whole, the pamphlet is a case study in how one lakeside vineyard practice was converted into institutional agricultural advice for another Swiss canton.

The Society's prefatory note is followed by Brun-Chappuis's Vorwort, which opens with an appeal to experiment: "Ich habe Kenntniss vom Rebbau erhalten wollen und mich, da ich keinen sicherern Führer fand als die Erfahrung, mehrere Jahre lang mit Versuchen beschäftigt" (the author wished to learn viticulture and, finding no surer guide than experience, spent several years in trials). He warns that the prose will offer clarity and simplicity rather than elegance, and that its vocabulary follows the usage of vine-growers in his own district. Nineteen numbered articles then move from soil preparation and the choice of cuttings to planting, pruning, earthing-up, layering, hoeing, manuring, weed control, and the recovery of exhausted vineyards. The sharpest practical intervention comes in the article on kitchen-garden cultivation among vines, where a common mixed-use practice is rejected from direct experience. The prefatory program recommends Klevner and white Gutedel for Aargau, while calling for the eradication of white Hünsch and Kleinburger.
Condition
Original contemporary pink printed wrappers; the front wrapper has a longer tear at the lower part, which has been recently restored with Japanese paper. Light browning, no foxing. Ex-libris Friedrich von Bassermann-Jordan (1872-1959), German wine estate owner, viticultural pioneer, and the most influential wine historian of his era, author of Geschichte des Weinbaus, which is the wine library of record for German viticultural history. Ink stamp with same provenance at the head of the title page. Good.

Why La Fenice likes it
An unassuming little wine pamphlet with the dirt of the Ryf Valley, Canton Vaud (Switzerland), under its fingernails: Brun-Chappuis captured mid-19th-century Aargau's forgotten ampelographic knowledge with experiment - and plain prose. Add Bassermann-Jordan provenance - viticultural pioneer and the most influential wine historian active some 50 years after publication - and it's viticultural history with pedigree.
