Molfino, Gian Maria
Lettera Ampelografica
1878, Genova, Tipografia E. Faziola E A. Papini
Published in Genoa, this work addresses the scarcity of information on Ligurian vines and engages with the efforts of a commission dedicated to producing a much-needed ampelography.
The author seeks to elevate cépage selection from random proximity to a scientific practice, and to encourage viticulture in a region traditionally focused on olive cultivation.
He acknowledges ongoing quality issues and advises against adopting intensive cultivation methods such as those in Hérault. The text discusses Erbaluce, Vermentino, Timorasso, Brachetto, Rossese, and other varieties from Nice to Luni. Barbarossa, mentioned here, is now being revived in Corsica. The book also includes Isabella, the American grape.
A signed tribute to a countess, and a pioneering plea for scientific viticulture in Liguria, now a hotbed for crisp, characterful whites.
