Ampelografia Della Provincia Di Alessandria
1875, Torino, Presso Augusto Federico Negro
Ampelografia della Provincia di Alessandria offers a detailed study of the grape varieties cultivated in Alessandria, Italy. Written by P. P. De Maria, it provides a thorough overview of the region’s vines, their characteristics, and methods of cultivation. This work is a valuable resource for viticulturists, agricultural historians, and anyone interested in the area’s rich viticultural heritage.
The book carefully documents both major and lesser-known local varieties, preserving knowledge of grapes unique to the province. Among those described, beyond Nebbiolo and other prominent types, are: Barbassese, Barbera bianca, Bonarda, Brachetto, Citronino, Coccalona bianca, Cortese, Croatina, Durà bianco, Gamba rossa, Grec rouge, Grignolino, Lambrusca di Alessandria, Malvasia di Casorzo, Malvasia moscata, Malvasia nera lunga, Moradella, Moscato nero di Acqui, Neretto di Marengo, Passeretta, Ruché, Slarina, Timorasso, Verdea, and Zanello.
Enriched with elegant fold-out trellis diagrams and hand-colored prints of the principal grapes, the book also dedicates a section to foreign varieties such as Gamay and Syrah, contextualized within Italian viticulture. Notably, Nebbiolo is highlighted as the leading variety, at the time still cultivated in Alessandria and today known primarily through Langhe Nebbiolo DOC.
A visual and viticultural time capsule, preserving rare local grapes and graced with stunning fold-outs and chromos that make your heart skip a beat.
