Les origines du cru de Haut-Brion-La Mission by Ferbos, René: a remarkable illustrative passage from the 1924 wine & viticulture volume

A Bordeaux Bookshelf - Six Rare Books on Bordeaux Wine, 1867-1924

September 2026

Six books that once might have shared a single Bordeaux shelf: a cellar manifesto against routine, a Sammelband binding four strands of the city's reading together, a medieval archive dug out and inscribed by its own author, an anonymous pamphlet that grew fourfold within six years, a bird's-eye survey absent from the standard bibliographies, and a dispute over the name Haut-Brion argued in someone's own footnotes. Spanning 1867 to 1924, they trace Bordeaux's wine trade less through its great chateaux than through the print culture that surrounded them.

July 2026: A Different Kind of Pairing

July 2026

Much like a favorite wine pairing, these books were chosen not only for what they say individually, but for the unexpected ways they bring out the best in one another. Eight volumes, paired in twos: Monuments & Marvels, The Natural Philosopher’s Cabinet, The Storyteller’s Art, Gilded Age New York.
