A Bordeaux Bookshelf - Six Rare Books on Bordeaux Wine, 1867-1924

Six books that once might have shared a single Bordeaux shelf: a cellar manifesto against routine, a Sammelband binding four strands of the city's reading together, a medieval archive dug out and inscribed by its own author, an anonymous pamphlet that grew fourfold within six years, a bird's-eye survey absent from the standard bibliographies, and a dispute over the name Haut-Brion argued in someone's own footnotes. Spanning 1867 to 1924, they trace Bordeaux's wine trade less through its great chateaux than through the print culture that surrounded them.

    Ferbos, René

Les origines du cru de Haut-Brion-La Mission

    1924

    First Edition

The claim to the Haut-Brion name traced back to 1682, with period newspaper clippings laid in. Inscribed by the author.

    CHF 547.00

First separate edition of Ferbos's tightly documented study of the origins of Château La Mission Haut-Brion, offprinted from tome XXXIX of the Actes de la Société Archéologique de Bordeaux. Ferbos traces the Lazarist fathers' ownership of the vineyard from a 1678 bequest and their installation as directors of the Bordeaux seminary in 1682, through more than a century of vineyard improvement, to the property's confiscation and sale as a bien national in 1792 (the history behind the [...]

  • Les Vins de Bordeaux.

Chasteigner, Paul de. Verdié, Antoine. Féret, Édouard. Le Doux, Jacques

    Les Vins de Bordeaux.

    1869

A picture of Bordeaux, late 1880s: a wine guide, a popular poet, a trade almanac, and a women's satire bound as one.

    CHF 674.00

This Sammelband gathers four strands of Bordeaux's own reading culture around 1870 under a single binding: a vineyard owner's practical guide to the region's wines, a dead local poet's collected verse in Gascon dialect, a wine-trade almanac for the coming year, and a satirical civic pamphlet in defense of the city's women. Together they read less as four unrelated pamphlets than as a portrait of what an educated Bordelais of the period might have kept on a single shelf. The compilation [...]

Notice sur la fabrication des vins

    1875

    First Edition

A cellar manifesto against routine, from pre-phylloxera Bordeaux.

    CHF 379.00

First edition of a remarkably concise manifesto for practical wine improvement, joining cellar hygiene and disciplined vinification to the increasingly ampelographic idea that the quality of wine begins with the choice of grape. Writing from Bordeaux in 1875, Eugène Glady attacks growers who remain "slaves to custom and routine," declaring routine "the negation of all progress." Drawing on his experience buying wines in the Agenais and Quercy, he moves from fermentation, racking [...]

  • Bordeaux à vol d'oiseau.

    Vène, Alexandre

    Bordeaux à vol d'oiseau.

    1867

    First Edition

A forgotten bird's-eye view of Bordeaux wine, from cépages and soils to the trade.

    CHF 295.00

Rare first edition of this slim survey, pitched at a general readership rather than the wine trade itself and belonging to the promotional à vol d'oiseau genre common in French regional publishing of the period. The formula had already entered wine literature with Auguste Luchet's La Côte-d'Or à vol d'oiseau (1858), and was brought to Bordeaux by Dr. Aussel's much larger La Gironde à vol d'oiseau. Ses grands vins et ses châteaux in 1865. Vène's vol d'oiseau, appearing only two years later [...]

Viticulture et Vinification en Bordelais au Moyen Age

    1912

    First Edition

1 of 15 papier à bras copies inscribed by the author as he left the Gironde archives for the Bordeaux spirits trade.

    CHF 169.00

First edition of Jean Barennes's study of medieval viticulture and winemaking in the Bordelais as newly attached archiviste-paléographe to the Gironde's own departmental archives. For the occasion, he gathered the result from a seven-part serialization in the Revue historique de Bordeaux et du département de la Gironde into this standalone edition, crowned by the Société d'Agriculture de la Gironde and prefaced by long-serving Gironde archivist J.-A. Brutails. This copy is signed as one of [...]
