The Gazeta Litteraria reviewed the book in the same year as its publication and judged it among the works that did honor to the Portuguese nation, establishing its importance among contemporary works.\u003cbr\u003e\nAlvares organizes his work into chapters and dissertations rather than as a continuous narrative, debating Creation under two main aspects. The first is how the world was made, drawing from the Bible but also reporting modern scientific and astronomical theories, to which he adds his own contribution. The second aspect analyzed is how long the world has lasted, in what season it was created, and how many years have passed since. Here Alvares folds in Ussher's \"Annals of the World\" (1650), which counted the biblical generations backward to fix Creation at 4004 BC, with its chronology corrected in this edition by P. Hadriano Daude. That chronology runs straight into the book's sharpest argument, \"Dissertação VII\": a direct rebuttal of Isaac de la Peyrère, whose 1655 Pre-Adamite thesis (i.e. that men existed before Adam) had been burned and whose author was forced to recant in Rome. The rebuttal was not aimed at a dead controversy: Enlightenment writers across Europe were reviving Pre-Adamism as a challenge to biblical chronology, and Alvares felt compelled to answer the argument.\u003cbr\u003e\nInocêncio 5, 353 confirms that this is the first and only edition: the work was intended to continue beyond this first volume, but no further volume is recorded as having been published.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe book opens with Part I, which begins by explaining the mechanics of Creation, moving through Moses, the ancient philosophical schools, Descartes, and Newton. An astronomical excursus at pp. 76-77 tabulates the distance from the Earth to the fixed stars according to seven authorities: Lansberge, Hortensius, Galileo, Kepler, Herigone, and Wolff, whose calculations are given in two competing figures, with Tycho's determinations cited alongside them. The same pages quote at length, and in the original Latin, Christiaan Huygens's account from the \"Cosmotheoros\" of an experiment measuring the apparent diameter of Sirius against the Sun through a perforated lens.\u003cbr\u003e\nThis section is completed by a folding plate showing seven numbered figures keyed to the Huygens passage quoted in the text: concentric planetary systems, elliptical orbits with a sun symbol, and a geometric construction for measuring apparent stellar diameter.\u003cbr\u003e\nPart II turns to chronology, presenting an \"Extracto das Tabellas Chronologicas de Usserio\": Archbishop Ussher's chronology of the world from Adam to Sarug, corrected by P. Hadriano Daude, and reconciling sacred history with the profane record down to the birth of Christ. Dissertação VII argues directly against the Pre-Adamites, naming Isaac de la Peyrère and his 1655 thesis that men existed before Adam, and answering him through citations of Maimonides's \"More Nevochim\" and Dom Augustin Calmet's biblical commentary.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eHalf science nerd, half churchman, Alvares is a perfect portrait of his age.
