Agriculture, Translated into the Vernacular by Benedetto Del Bene, Member of the Institute Contemporary Paper Boards Verona Presso Giovanni Gambaretti Vol. I of 2 (II missing). Pp XV, 497, [2] errata corrige, 2 folded tables. In contemporary paper boards (with discoloration and losses to the upper cover), red-sprinkled edges; spine detached at the rear hinge but still holding at the front; internally in very fine condition. First volume of the Italian translation by Benedetto Del Bene of Columella’s De re rustica, the most comprehensive surviving Roman agricultural treatise, originally composed in the 1st century CE/AD. This (translated) volume of Columella can be considered a foundational Roman manual on winemaking, reinterpreted through Enlightenment eyes, a rare blend of viticultural history, classical scholarship, and pastoral philosophy. This volume includes the first six books of Columella’s work: Book I is about the farmer and his estate, and Book II focuses on soil, climate, and general crop cultivation. Books III, IV, and V are entirely dedicated to the vine, with part of Book V devoted to the olive tree. Book VI addresses animal husbandry, including preventive medicine for cattle, diseases and their remedies, horse breeds, and the treatment of illnesses in horses and donkeys. Del Bene’s translation renders the Latin into accessible and elegant Italian, reflecting Enlightenment-era agrarian interest in classical sources. The work is significant not only for its philological precision, but also for the translator’s extensive annotations and commentary, which connect ancient agricultural practices to the reformist spirit of late 18th-century Italy. Above all, the three books dedicated to viticulture provide invaluable insight into: ancient Roman techniques for vine planting, pruning, and trellising; observations on soil types, climate, and vineyard orientation; a detailed picture of how wine production was interwoven with Roman economy and daily life. The two folded plates depict vine cultivation and horse management. It’s like having a 2,000-year-old Roman winemaker giving you vineyard tips, livestock advice, and a dash of philosophy, proof that good farming (and good wine) never go out of style.

Cosimo Trinci’s L’agricoltore sperimentato stands out not just for its comprehensive, month-by-month guide to 18th-century Tuscan agriculture, but for one particular vine: in its earliest editions, Trinci singles out “San Zoveto” as a grape of outstanding quality, an early nod to what we now know as Sangiovese.
Chapter XXXI (pp. 112–113) describes the Uva Rossa S. Bernardo Davanzati Bostichi Gentil'Huomo Fiorentino. The First Whisper of Sangiovese: Soderini’s Ode to Tuscan Vines. Treatise on the Cultivation of Vines and the Tuscan Cultivation of Vines and Certain Trees, and on the Fruit That May Be Obtained from Them, by Signor Giovanni Vittorio Soderini, Florentine Gentleman, and The Tuscan Cultivation of Vines and Certain Trees by Signor Bernardo Davanzati Bostichi, Florentine Gentleman. Contemporary Stiff Vellum Firenze Giunti Pp. [1] f.e., [8], 128, [8]; [4], 45, [3], [1] r.e. Later vellum binding (XIX century?), leather label at the spine with title in gold (very small losses), red sprinkled edges. Traces of old handwritten notes on the title page, illegible; very few contemporary handwritten notes in the margins. Silk green boookmark. Interesting attempt to replace two missing leaves in the dedication [5, 8], substituted with anastatic copies on slightly bluish antique paper, but taken from another edition, so the text between [5] and [6] is not perfectly sequential (with some repeated lines) and the layout is slightly different. Nevertheless, thanks to this probably nineteenth-century contrivance, the text is complete. Old repair to lower corner of p. 13 of the second pagination. Considering the makeshift repair to the dedication a minor flaw (or even a touch of addedd personality), this rare second edition is attractive and in good conditions. This edition of Trattato della coltivazione delle Viti by Giovanvettorio Soderini offers one of the earliest written mentions of Sangiogheto, now known as Sangiovese, the grape that would later underpin much of Tuscany’s wine identity. Soderini, a Florentine nobleman with a gentleman farmer’s curiosity, praises the grape for being “juicy and overflowing with wine” and declares it “never fails,” a statement that borders on either satire or wishful thinking, considering “the grape’s notoriously fickle nature”, quoting Kerin O’Keefe’s mention of Soderini in her Brunello Di Montalcino. “In Lombardy the grape Grappella is much praised, being similar, or almost the same, as that called Gallazzone: valued for making wine are the Voltoiane, the Schiavene nere, the Sangiovese - vines praised for making a great deal of wine - the Cornicchioni, the Trebbiani…” The author isn’t praising Sangiovese for finesse or nobility, but for its productivity and usefulness in making large quantities of wine. This reflects early 17th-century viticultural values, where yield and consistency were prized, since wine was both daily sustenance and trade commodity. The reference shows that by 1610, Sangiovese was already an established and recognized Tuscan grape variety, worthy of inclusion in a systematic viticultural manual. What makes this quote fascinating is the contrast with today: Sangiovese is now celebrated not for quantity but for quality, forming the backbone of Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The volume includes both Soderini and Davanzati Bostichi, making it a compendium of Florentine agronomic thought. In one of the many chapters Soderini asks which is better: planting in vineyards, or as rows, stumps, little trees, or pergola. The pergola is presented as one of several possible training methods (others include low vines in rows, arboscelli, etc.). The discussion emphasizes that pergolas allow the vine to climb higher, which fits the plant’s natural tendency. This leads to a cheerful and vigorous vine, producing more clusters. However, the author warns: a vineyard trained too high may make the grapes less concentrated, while smaller vineyards often produce better quality wine.This passage reflects a long-running debate in viticulture between yield vs. quality. Bostichi touched on the subject too explaining how vines trained on pergolas can be pruned and spaced in a way that allows them to spread, giving them room to grow strong and bear fruit. Here pergolas are described as favorable for vines in orchards and gardens, where they can climb and spread, often over trellises or supports. In the Renaissance, the pergola was as much an architectural and social feature as an agricultural one - used to shade walkways, courtyards, and gardens. Soderini acknowledges its aesthetic function but emphasizes that the fruit quality is not diminished by this “ornamental” training system. This places pergola viticulture at the intersection of utility and beauty, which is very Florentine. The historical trajectory from “a vine praised for making much wine” to one of Italy’s most prestigious varietals makes this passage a keystone in wine history. This second edition, rarer than the first, includes detailed guidance on vine training and arboriculture, all shaped by the Tuscan landscape. More than 400 years ago, Soderini understood that Sangiovese (or, in a much cuter antique way, Sangiogheto) was a drama queen which could swing from rustic to regal, and in the right hands it delivered some of the juiciest wines of the region. This rare second edition overflows with Tuscan vine lore, a spirited milestone in Italy’s wine story still referenced today by experts. Engraved plate opposite the title page (within the pagination) depicting an elegant horse. Ten woodcut illustrations in the text, primarily focused on equine anatomy. Some slight and negligible signs of age. Fine copy. Italian translation of a rare French veterinary manual on horse anatomy, care, and remedies, used by stablemasters in Napoleonic-era Europe when horse care was central to military and agricultural power. It serves as a fascinating artifact for those studying the intersection of agriculture, animal health, and technology at a pivotal moment in European history. The book offers practical guidance highly valued by breeders and veterinarians alike. Publications of this kind were widely used by stablemasters (marescalchi), farriers, and rural veterinarians at the turn of the 19th century. The text blends early veterinary science (anatomical observations, disease classification) with traditional remedies (herbal recipes, magical-seeming cures). This hybrid character is a hallmark of veterinary manuals before the full professionalization of veterinary medicine (the first veterinary schools were founded only in the mid-to-late 18th century). The content covers the cognition and anatomy of horses, including physical structure, behavior, and function; common equine illnesses and their treatments, from colic to limb disorders; methods of horse care such as feeding, grooming, and preventive measures; and therapeutic prescriptions, including medications, poultices, and veterinary remedies. The recipes are especially noteworthy for their use of herbs and natural elements. The anatomical woodcuts enhance its value to historians and collectors of veterinary literature, offering a vivid glimpse into pre-modern veterinary practice. Zatta was one of the most renowned Venetian publishers of the late 18th century, known for high-quality illustrated editions. Reading the medical recipes is both entertaining and revealing, uncovering ancient natural knowledge that continues to fascinate us. First edition A fascinating practical guide to chiromancy (palm reading) and other forms of divination, such as metoposcopy (reading of forehead lines) and physiognomy (analysis of facial features). Praetorius lived during the Baroque period, when science, superstition, and philosophy frequently overlapped. He belonged to a class of learned men deeply interested in the mystical, magical, and folkloric, and he played a significant role in collecting and documenting popular beliefs and occult traditions in early modern Germany. For this reason, he is considered a precursor to folklorists and ethnographers. His writings offer modern scholars valuable insight into the mentalities and imaginations of 17th-century Europeans. The work Ludicrum Chiromanticum is divided into several parts and reflects the author’s scientific training, with repeated astrological references. As with Copernicus, Praetorius chooses to invoke the figure of the legendary Hermes Trismegistus. The first part of the work introduces the fundamental terms of “chirosophy.” The second, shorter part consists of a type of manual for recognizing destinies or events through the study of the hand (long life, short life, illnesses, violent death, etc.). The third part introduces “chirology,” asserting without hesitation that Chiromantia est scientia, and elaborates on everything only hinted at in the first part: the lines of the hand, mounts, fingers, nails, with a focus on the correct proportions of the hand. Subsequently, the author presents works by various philosophers and physicians, including Robert Fludd’s Chiromantia and the Chiromantia of Balthasar Summer and Samuel Kelner. Of particular interest is the section “Bibliotheca Chiromantica,” which lists the principal publications on the subject, such as the works of Achillini, Cardano, Cocles, Corvus, Gaurico, Göckel, Piccioli, and Tricasso. The Ludicrum concludes with a treatise on metoposcopy. Noteworthy is the richly illustrated frontispiece, showing in the lower left the figures of Hermes Trismegistus, Johannes Indagine, and Rudolph Göckel. Despite being presented as the most comprehensive treatise on chiromancy, the work was never reprinted. From: QUERINIANA CHIROMANTICA. First edition, but incomplete. 18th-century half green calf with marbled boards. The binding originally contained a second volume, now lacking, leaving about half of the inner spine exposed. Attractive printer’s device on the title page; small early ownership note in the lower margin. Final quire (M) loose. A study copy. First edition Like many Florentine humanists, Pietro Vettori engaged in practical agriculture, blending classical references (Columella, Varro) with Tuscan practice. His Trattato delle lodi et della coltivazione de gl’ulivi praises the olive tree and gives practical instructions on cultivation and oil-making. His agricultural writings also anticipate the fusion of literature, natural science, and regional identity that shaped Tuscan food and wine culture. This makes him part of the early canon of Tuscan agronomic literature, alongside Alamanni, Soderini, and later Davanzati. This Renaissance agronomic treatise, blending classical erudition with hands-on agriculture, is often cited as an early, influential Tuscan text on olive culture and oil, praising the olive and detailing cultivation, harvesting, and pressing practices. The book kept its popularity across centuries, with editions all the way to the 19th century. Richard Dalby, The Golden Age of Children’s Book Illustration, 2002. One of the great fairy tales of Northern Europe, East of the Sun and West of the Moon has enchanted readers for centuries with its blend of romance, adventure, and myth. Rooted in Norwegian folklore, it tells the story of a young girl who follows a white bear to a distant castle, discovers his hidden identity, and sets out on a perilous quest to rescue him, traveling - as the title suggests - to a land beyond imagination. This early 1920s edition is brought vividly to life through the luminous illustrations of Kay Nielsen, the celebrated Danish artist of the Golden Age of book illustration. Nielsen’s work, with its sinuous lines, jewel-like colors, and dreamlike Nordic atmosphere, gave the tale its definitive visual form and secured his reputation alongside Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. His plates for this story are among the most iconic of his career, marrying Art Nouveau elegance with a distinctly Scandinavian sense of wonder. First published in 1914, this beautiful volume has been reprinted many times up to the present day. Nielsen’s unique style and talent for combining the eerie and fantastic with beautiful decorative effect was at its peak with this set of illustrations (Dalby, p. 90). A classic of fairy-tale literature and illustration history, this edition stands as both a testament to the enduring power of folklore and a showcase of Nielsen’s genius at the height of his career. This book feels like a fairy tale twice over: once in the story itself, and again in the way it’s illustrated. The moment you open it, you step into Nielsen’s jewel-like dreamscape, where every line curves like a spell and every color seems to glow from within. It is both a familiar and a strange experience: an old Norwegian tale made modern by one of the great illustrators of the Golden Age. Fairy tales survive, wander, and get retold- and sometimes, like this volume, they come down to us with their own story etched into their very pages.

Due Conferenze Tenutesi Nel Comizio Agrario Di Torino. Steel engravings on the final numbered leaf (illustrations curiously numbered 14, 18, though collation is complete; the numbering may continue from other publications on the subject advertised by the publisher on the recto). Perfect condition. Rare first edition of two lectures by Giuseppe, Count of Rovasenda, on the phylloxera crisis, delivered at the Agricultural Assembly of Turin. The dedication is addressed to the Console of Putignano (himself an author on vine diseases such as downy mildew), suggesting this pamphlet, together with some others in our availability, once belonged to his heirs. A crucial document for understanding Italy’s earliest responses to the arrival of the phylloxera louse. The text reflects the very moment of phylloxera’s first arrival in Italy. Citing Jules-Émile Planchon as a contemporary authority, Rovasenda traces its detection to a vineyard in Nice (recently annexed to France) after vines from Provence were planted there. He reviews the main remedies under debate (sandy soils, submersion, grafting), while emphasizing promising reports on the use of insecticides. Importantly, he stresses the need for discernment in selecting American rootstocks, noting that varieties such as Concord, Catawba, and Isabella were not equally suitable for replanting. The lectures also map the spread of phylloxera from France into Italy, region by region. Rovasenda employs the memorable phrase “Nemo dat quod non habet” to argue that Vitis vinifera could never develop resistance on its own. The work concludes with the “Riunione della Commissione Ampelografica della Provincia di Torino, 27 febbraio 1879,” offering a vivid glimpse into the scientific, agricultural, and communal efforts of vineyard owners and growers at the close of the 19th century. A front-row seat to Italy’s first response to phylloxera, with rare insights into 19th-century remedies like insecticides and grafting. This volume is the third printing of the first London edition of André Simon’s reviews of wines from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Written by André Simon (1877-1970), one of the world’s foremost authorities on wine and food, it reflects the breadth of his experience as a French-born wine merchant, bibliophile, gourmet, and prolific writer. In his introduction, Simon notes both the shortages “in the sixth year” of the Second World War and his aim in writing the book: to “sharpen the critical sense and the wine sense of the rising generation.” The contents include: Best Vintages, Sherry, Port, Madeira, Claret, Burgundy, Champagne, Hocks and Moselles, The White Wines of France, and Other Wines. The work begins with a list of best vintages, ranking wines from 1847 to 1944, and continues with detailed accounts of the evolution and performance of major wines across those decades. It offers a unique perspective on the commercial development of wine, evoking names that have vanished, those that endure, and the shifting character of taste. Simon recalls dinners where Margaux 1900 was purchased for 30 francs, Mouton Rothschild enjoyed from a magnum, and Romanée-Conti 1889 savored in 1932 with great satisfaction. He defines champagne as “the most helpful wine in case of debility,” remembers Ayala’s first dry shipment in 1865 (long before Pommery’s claim) and often cites Mumm, once immensely popular in England before being requisitioned as a German brand during the war. The book concludes with Simon’s accounts of his Lucullan dinners, complete with guests, menus, and wines, offering not only a guide to fine drinking but also a glimpse into the world of London society at its most refined. Because Simon doesn’t just describe wine: he serenades it. His prose has the rhythm of a fine dinner and the memory of a great cellar.

Published in 1933, just as America was emerging from Prohibition, American Wines, And How To Make Them by Philip M. Worming at the upper right corner beginning around p. 190, worsened by browning, reaching into the text with occasional minor losses (also affecting some plates bound in this second part of the volume). Plates inserted at p. 303 particularly damaged. The 3 separate engravings in the lot are in perfect conditions. The book includes 29 plates (some folded), plus the illustrated frontispiece. Some otehr copies are recorded with 27 or 28 plates, making this volume particularly rich. Although this volume has seen better days, it remains complete. The lot, enriched by the three additional prints, makes for an intriguing and charming curiosity. First volume of the third edition of Misson’s immensely popular “touristic guide,” beaucoup augmentée, & enrichie de nouvelles Figures (“greatly enlarged and enriched with new illustrations”). The volume is sold as a lot with three separate engravings which are mirrored copies of the plates found in the book - identical in design but reversed, and showing slight typographical differences in the legends. These curious plates were drawn and engraved by copying the book’s images directly, resulting in reversed impressions. Piazza San Marco, see book p.197 Palazzo Ducale, and a gondola); Rialto, see book p. 228; a gondola, see book p. 243 The three engravings, identified through personal research (and not part of the original publication), stand as tangible evidence of a common (but not easy to document) practice of the time, making this ensemble particularly intriguing and historically significant. The book, in letter form, carries a Dutch privilege granted to publisher Henry van Bulderen by the States of Holland and West-Friesland, funnily protecting his exclusive rights for 15 years and penalizing counterfeit editions (see the 3 engravings sold in the lot!). The letters first describe travels through Holland, The Hague, Rotterdam, Delft, and Amsterdam, blending historical remarks, civic description, and personal observation. Entering Germany, the author records Bavarian landscapes near Munich and the Alps, with details of chalets, cheese-making, and mountain hospitality. Crossing the Tyrol into Italy, he depicts dramatic geography and the dangers of brigands, requiring armed escorts. Arrival in Verona brings sharp observations of city life and landscape. The engravings are a highlight, balancing antiquarian detail with ethnographic curiosity. They include a full-page plate of a German woman in mourning dress, accompanied by commentary on police regulations governing attire by religion and social rank, and a large folding plate of Roman antiquities, vases, lamps, ritual implements, arms, and ornaments, numbered with a French legend, one of the book’s most striking antiquarian features. Later letters describe Italy in greater depth, including Venice and the Rialto Bridge, with architectural commentary and measurements that combine firsthand observation with antiquarian interest. As part of the Grand Tour genre, the work appealed to European elites and is notable for its cosmopolitan blend of Dutch, English, and Italian perspectives. Earlier editions were slimmer, but this third edition is significantly expanded with more text and illustrations. Written in French, printed in The Hague, and dedicated to an Anglo-Irish noble, it reflects the international circulation of travel literature at the close of the 17th century. The epistolary format made it more engaging and intimate than conventional travelogues. The three engravings sold in this lot are more difficult to date with certainty: they could be contemporary with the book, or produced later to avoid penalties for counterfeiting. It is also possible that both the book’s plates and these loose engravings derive from a third source, perhaps another travel book. In fact, it was not uncommon for engravers and publishers to reproduce well-known views without the effort of reinventing the subject. To a trained eye, the hand here appears simpler and less refined than the book's one: certain small details are missing, and the shading is flatter. These features suggest a derivative intent, a more economical copy intended to emulate the original - whichever it was. If the book itself is yet another Grand Tour account, La Fenice managed to add a sprinkle of mystery for the most tenacious print-history lovers: three almost identical, yet mirrored plates. First edition of Lodovico Dolce’s "Dialogo della memoria", a treatise on techniques for employing vivid mental images and repetition to fix complex texts in memory. The text is an important Italian adaptation of Johannes Romberch’s "Congestorium artificiosae memoriae", first published in Venice by Giorgio de’ Rusconi in 1520. Dolce, A Venetian polygraph, translator, and theorist, reshapes Romberch’s Dominican mnemonic treatise into a graceful vernacular dialogue, elegantly suited to Italian rhetorical culture. For this edition's illustrations, the Sessa press reused the wooden blocks first cut for Rusconi’s 1520 "Congestorium", acquired by their family when they reprinted the work in 1533. The series also incorporates the famous visual alphabet of tools, animals, and objects, first printed by Erhard Ratdolt in Publicius’s 1482 edition, one of the earliest mnemonic alphabets in Europe. Among the images is the celebrated city view showing a shopfront marked “Bibliopola” (street bookshop) which Sander (for the 1520 edition) proposes may be the first printed depiction of a street-facing bookshop window. References: Sander 6555; Adams D-732; Mortimer Italian 157; Wellcome 1828. The text unfolds as a didactic dialogue between teacher and disciple, structured to accompany the reader from sensory perception to the celestial hierarchy of ideas. The plates and text together form one of the most complete and fascinating vernacular expositions of the “art of memory” available in sixteenth-century Europe. The volume’s twenty-three woodcuts are of exceptional iconographic and pedagogical interest. Among them appear striking visual aids for mental architecture and symbolic association, such as: a diagram of the human head mapping the faculties of sense and memory, which is a Renaissance visualization of Aristotelian psychology and one of the earliest examples of phrenological illustration (B5); a figure within a perspectival room, illustrating spatial "loci", and a sort of "memory space" used for mental storage of concepts in different chambers of an imaginary building (D1r; I1); a cosmological diagram of the celestial spheres, integrating memory with divine order (D5r); the famous urban scene depicting a “Bibliopola” in a city landscape, believed to be the earliest printed image of a street-front bookshop (E1r); and finally the visual alphabet of objects, tools, and animals, one of the earliest mnemonic alphabets (G4-G7), together with other similar visual tools (E3, H2, H3 and more). Together these woodcuts compose a vivid synthesis of mnemonic, rhetorical, and visual theory. Lodovico Dolce (1508–1568), Venetian humanist and translator, was deeply involved in the city’s printing industry and became known for his prolific output, skillful adaptations of classical and philosophical works into elegant Italian prose, and his ability to bridge Renaissance erudition with a broader reading public. Memory made visible: a visual symphony of ancient philosophy and the workings of the mind, brought to life by a parade of Renaissance tools, curious animals, objects, and artifacts drawn straight from the sixteenth century. Published in 1862, William Thomson’s A Practical Treatise on the Cultivation of the Grape Vine stands as one of the most popular works in nineteenth-century viticulture, becoming immediately so sought after to require a second edition the same year. In this small treatise Thomson details every stage of cultivation, from soil preparation and pruning to the architectural design of glass vineries adapted to a cooler weather such as the Scottish northern climate. Particularly striking is his advocacy for the cultivation of vines in pots and vases, an innovation that allowed even limited spaces to enjoy fruiting. This practical ingenuity, combined with elegant clarity of instruction, made the book a horticultural landmark and a testament to Victorian scientific ambition. In this thorough mid-Victorian guide to grapevine cultivation, blending technical precision with hands-on advice (especially for cooler Northern climates), Thomson offers careful instructions on pruning, ventilation, watering, and the subtle art of managing root temperature and moisture, essential for healthy vines. Detailed diagrams illustrate vinery layouts, heating systems, and training structures, reflecting the era’s push toward controlled, scientific cultivation. Special attention is given to growing vines in pots and vases, both decorative and surprisingly fruitful, with thoughtful notes on their care and yield. Varietal guidance is extensive, covering grapes suited to early and late forcing: Black Hamburgh, Royal Muscadine, Trebbiano, and Lady Downe’s Seedling among them. The final chapters detail best practices for harvesting, packing, and preserving fruit for winter tables or market transport. William Thomson (1815-1895) was a prominent Scottish horticulturist expert in orchid cultivation during the Victorian era. He served as the head gardener to the Duke of Buccleuch at the prestigious Dalkeith Palace, near Edinburgh. His work there gained him a formidable reputation for his skill and scientific approach to horticulture. A fine copy. 7 1/2 x 5 x 1 1/4 English An illustrated cornerstone of mid-19th century American viticultural literature. A cornerstone of mid-19th century American viticultural literature, Open Air Grape Culture by John Phin stands as one of the most comprehensive and methodical guides to the cultivation of the grape in the Northern and Middle States. Written at a moment when American horticulture sought to rival the established viticultural traditions of Europe, Phin’s work combines scientific precision with the practical knowledge of a cultivator deeply engaged in the soil. The author, celebrated for his award-winning Essay on Open Air Grape Culture (recipient of the First Premium of the American Institute), expands here upon his earlier work to present a full system of vineyard management adapted to the climate and conditions of North America. An essential work for the historian of American viticulture, Open Air Grape Culture bridges the period between early horticultural experimentation and the later emergence of professional enology. It remains a fascinating testament to the optimism and agrarian ingenuity of the Civil War era, when the dream of an American vineyard culture was still fresh and full of promise. Phin’s treatise covers the entire life of the vine, from the natural and civil history of Vitis to the selection of soils, planting, pruning, training, and the complex care of vines through their successive years of growth. The later sections offer an invaluable descriptive catalogue of native American grape varieties, such as Concord, Delaware, Diana, Catawba, and Isabella, accompanied by a comparative table of size, color, and flavor, providing one of the earliest systematic classifications of American grapes. To these are added directions for the domestic manufacture of wine, including recipes for currant, elderberry, and other fruit wines, all verified by direct practice. Particularly noteworthy is the appendix devoted to The Thomery System of Grape Culture, translated and adapted from the French methods developed at Fontainebleau. This celebrated system, which produced the renowned Chasselas grapes of Thomery, is here given in full with engravings illustrating the trellised vines, horizontal and vertical cordons, and the intricate processes of pruning and preservation. Phin’s inclusion of this European technique, carefully adjusted to American conditions, reflects his vision of uniting the scientific horticulture of the Old World with the experimental vigor of the New. John Phin (1830-1913). Scottish-American author, educator, inventor a Shakespeare scholar; he is noted for his accessible works on science, microscopy, and applied arts, including The Seven Follies of Science and How to Use the Microscope. Lavishly illustrated with nearly 200 engravings, this volume captures every stage of grape culture, from soil preparation and vineyard layout to pruning, training systems, disease control, and the complexities of fermentation. The illustrations are of remarkable clarity, revealing the root systems, trellis structures, and training methods with botanical accuracy rare for the period. Mead’s work holds particular historical importance as it bridges European viticultural methods and the unique demands of American soils and climates. The author’s lucid explanations and empirical approach made this text indispensable to 19th-century growers, while its detailed engravings remain a visual delight for the modern reader. A classic of agricultural literature and an invaluable artifact of early American wine history. This volume guides the reader from the ground up, beginning with vineyard establishment through careful consideration of soil preparation, manures, climate, exposure, and shelter. It offers clear instruction on planting and training techniques, presenting the Guyot, Thomery, Bow, and Jura systems with precise, well rendered illustrations. The author provides an extensive study of grape varieties, examining their growth habits, fruit quality, and suitability to different regions. Detailed engravings throughout illuminate vine anatomy, pruning practices, trellis construction, and the tools essential to vineyard work. Further chapters address the diseases and insects that threaten the vine, outlining early treatments that rely on sulfur, lime, and attentive field management. The second half turns to the craft of winemaking, following the process from harvest and pressing to fermentation, storage, and the organization of a well kept cellar. Across more than 460 pages, the work blends horticultural knowledge with practical technique, creating a complete reference for both professional and aspiring growers. Peter B. Mead, 19th-century American horticulturist and viticulture expert, collaborator with botanist George Engelmann on early studies of American grape varieties. It’s science with soil under its nails: an 1850s American vision of viticulture so methodical, empirical, and proudly local it reads like the nation teaching itself how to grow and ferment, rom harvest to cellar.

Studio d’architettura civile sopra gli Ornamenti di Porte e Finestre tratti da alcune Fabbriche insigni di Roma (...)

Con le Misure, Piante, Modini, e Profili. An excellent copy. 15 x 9 3/4 x 3/4 Multiple Fifty-three plates of the finest Late Renaissance and Baroque Roman architecture on the go, for Italian and German artists. A magnificent first edition of Alessandro Specchi’s German version of his monumental Studio d’architettura civile, based on his works published by Domenico de Rossi in Rome and here adapted by Krauss with the addition of German text. The work originated in Rome between 1702 and 1721, when Domenico de Rossi assembled technical drawings from the leading masters of the Renaissance and Baroque such as Michelangelo Buonarroti, Antonio da Sangallo, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Raffaello Sanzio, Francesco Borromini, and others. Their ornamental inventions (doors, windows, cornices, portals), engraved by Specchi, form a true grammar of civic beauty and proportion. This folio, composed entirely of superb plates, conveys the essence of Roman Late Renaissance and Baroque architecture, its measured grandeur and sculptural invention, to architects and draughtsmen across Northern Europe. The explanatory text on the plates appears in both Italian and German, enhancing its usefulness and adding, to the plates’ beauty, the printer’s craftsmanship and noteworthy philological interest. Fifty-three engraved plates, including two title pages and four folded double plates, display architectural details from Rome’s most celebrated buildings: Campidoglio, Vatican Palace, Palazzo Farnese, Palazzo Barberini, Palazzo Chigi, S. Giovanni in Laterano, Propaganda Fide, among others. Each plate bears precise measurements, plans, and profiles, arranged with scholarly rigor and artistic flair. Among the most admired are the round staircase plates, spiraling in perfect geometry, suspended between light and structure. These engravings after Borromini’s and Bernini’s famed helicoidal stairs, reveal the Baroque genius for transforming function into motion, and stone into living rhythm. The engraver renders them with astonishing clarity and precision, capturing the vertiginous grace that made Roman architecture a theatre of perspective and form. The suite stands as both a teaching tool and a visual hymn to the Eternal city. Alessandro Specchi (1668-1729) was a Roman architect and engraver, student of Carlo Fontana, known for his Baroque designs and measured architectural engravings. Domenico de' Rossi (1659–1730) was an Italian printer, active in Rome from 1691 to about 1724. Upon his father's death, he inherited the printshop near the church of Santa Maria della Pace, the largest and most long-lived publisher of the Roman baroque. Roman genius distilled into line and light: a poetry of stone, shadow, and proportion carried across Europe in engravings that taught architects how to dream; a suite that stands as both masterclass and visual hymn, a teaching tool forged into an ode to the Italian Late Renaissance and Baroque, radiant with proportion, invention, and Roman dream.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0766/2000/5611/files/075_016_7118b6fc-a8db-421f-88c8-fd55357ece06.jpg?v=1764981291
barretta-manuel-complet-chocolatier-1841
Manuel complet, théorique et pratique, du chocolatier, limonadier, distillateur-liquoriste

Pp. Published in Paris and Lyon in 1841, this very rare first edition is one of the most ambitious technical culinary manuals of the nineteenth century. Charles-Joseph Barretta brings together eight distinct treatises, forming a vast compendium of applied gastronomy at the crossroads of craftsmanship, chemistry, and early industrial thinking. The work reflects a post-Revolutionary culture obsessed with method, reproducibility, and control. Barretta addresses professionals rather than amateurs, translating artisanal knowledge into precise procedures supported by measurements, temperatures, and apparatus. Eight engraved plates illustrate distillation and production equipment, signaling a transition from domestic craft to semi-industrial practice. The final and substantial sections devoted to wine, aromatized beverages, and vinegars elevate the volume far beyond a confectioner’s handbook, making it a remarkable proto-enological reference.

Verdizotti, a close associate and pupil of Titian, authored both the texts and the woodcut images for this rare but renowned collection of fables, which stands as a high point of Venetian Renaissance illustration. This second impression, expanded from the 1676 first edition, reflects the rising economic and cultural importance of domestic fruit cultivation in late seventeenth-century England. At a time when wine imports dominated consumption, Worlidge argued for the practical and climatic advantages of British orchards, promoting cider as a viable and rational alternative grounded in local resources. Worlidge belonged to an early generation of agricultural reformers who sought to systematize rural practice through observation, experiment, and clear technical instruction. His work extends beyond cider alone, addressing the cultivation of “vinous” fruit trees and incorporating a substantial discussion of bee improvement, acknowledging the close relationship between fruit growing and apiculture. The presence of engraved frontispieces and illustrations underscores the publisher’s investment in presenting the treatise as both a serious technical manual and a visually authoritative reference. Taken as a whole, the book stands as a practical compendium of orchard and cellar knowledge, offering a structured approach to fruit cultivation and drink production at a moment when English agriculture was becoming increasingly organized and self-conscious as a science.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0766/2000/5611/files/095_007_88140760-325a-4792-a16a-f4bb04370b7e.jpg?v=1771035010
